Printing on plain paper

  1. Any ordinary white printer paper works.
  2. Print at 100% / Actual size — not “Fit to page”.
  3. The check is at the top of the sheet; cut along its edge.
  4. For a file instead, use Download PDF — it's the same check, ready to upload.

The VOID stamp means it can never be cashed. It only tells them where to send the money.

How it works

1

Type your details

Your routing and account numbers from the bottom of a check or your online banking; the bank name fills in for most banks. Add your name and address.

2

Download or print

Download the PDF (or an image) to upload, or print it on plain paper — the printed design makes it look like a real check.

3

Hand it in

Attach it to the direct-deposit form, upload it to the payroll portal, or take a picture with your phone.

When you're asked for a voided check

A voided check works because it shows your routing number and account number exactly as the bank prints them, in the bank-readable font at the bottom. Writing VOID across it means nobody can fill it in and cash it.

Questions

What is a voided check?

One of your own checks with VOID written across it so it can never be cashed. Employers, payroll companies and billers ask for one because it shows your bank's routing number and your account number exactly as the bank prints them — what they need to set up direct deposit or automatic payments.

Do I need real check stock or a checkbook?

No. A VOID check only carries information and can't be cashed, so plain printer paper is fine. With the plain-paper option the check prints with a tinted design, so a photo or scan looks the part.

Is it safe to type my account number here?

The check is drawn entirely inside your browser, and the PDF is made there too. Nothing you type is sent to Make A Check or stored anywhere; close the tab and it's gone. Only hand the check to someone you'd trust with your bank details — the same as with any voided check.

They want a picture or a PDF, not paper.

Click Download PDF or Download image and upload the file, or print it and take a photo. Both are accepted by most payroll and HR systems.

My bank's name didn't fill in.

The lookup covers the routing numbers of the largest banks and credit unions. If yours isn't on the list, just type the bank's name — the routing and account numbers are what the form really needs.

Is a printed VOID check legal?

Yes. A voided check has no value; it conveys your routing and account numbers, the same information a bank puts on a direct-deposit letter. Enter your own account details only.

Where can I read more about this?

The guides cover the questions that come with a voided check: how to get one with or without a checkbook, which number is which, and what payroll will ask you for.

Can I print real checks too?

Yes — that's what Make A Check is for. Bank-ready checks on blank check stock with a proper bank-readable bottom line: three free, then credits from 77¢ a check, or unlimited checks on a plan from $9 a month. See how it works.

Need to pay someone by check?

Make A Check prints real, bank-ready checks from your own printer on blank check stock. Your bank details are saved encrypted, with two-step sign-in. Three checks free.
